Cenote is a term that is only used in Mexico and comes from the Mayan word "dzonot" which means "abyss."
For the Mayan culture, cenotes were considered sources of life, in addition to providing vital liquid, they were an entrance to another world and a center of communion with the gods. In English, these formations are known as sinkholes and in Portuguese, sinkholes, there are three types of cenote.
